I swear we have none and all of the luck when it comes to sheep.
We had been having lambing issues the previous 3 years after 2 years of no dramas. We changed the ram and still had one issue last year, which is better than 50% of my small flock.
This year we changed out the old girls and brought in some new girls, 2 of the 6 had had lambs before and 4 were maidens. I was happy with that maidens usually have singles and life will be happy.
Yeah not so much.
Just on dusk last night one of the maidens went into labour. 60min later no progress so we were out and got her into the crush.
It took me a minute to realise she had twins trying to come out together. The first was pushed below the rim of the pelvis and on the side. The behind was ontop.
She was so so tight.
I managed to get them both out without giving her a tear. Thank God though there was a moderate amount of blood and I was worried I had accidentally torn something and she would bleed out once the lambs were out and the pressure eased. But she didn't.
The lambs were a bit flat and needed a bit of clearing and stimulating but both came round great.
It was pitch black and we did this by torch and car light.
Little brag moment from leaving the house to run them in and return, shower included 35min. My new record
Being a maiden poor mumma was traumatized and we left her alone with the lambs to let them bond.
Yeah Na!!!! She ignored them completely.
So out we go again 30 min later and ran her back in and got them latched on. They had a really good feed and she stood stock still for them.
So we let her out and left them be again to see if this would trigger mothering.
No dice!!!
So the lambs spent the night in the spare room and I topped them up with lamb formula. Not ideal but it was 9pm by this time.
The lambs are up and bouncing and so healthy.
They have had another top up and we will try and reintroduce them to mum and if worst comes to worst run her in so they can get more colostrum.
Mumma is good this morning seems to have passed her placenta when I briefly checked. But not calling for the lambs.
So everyone is alive so far. Good thing it was twins as there is no way she could have birthed a single lamb, it was touch and go getting the smaller twins out.
