I had 3 calves this year with contracted front tendons, 2 very mild and were fine withing 24 hours. The 3rd was Rosies calf, he was very bad, walking on his front knuckles, only able to stand long enough to nurse then right back down. I feel it was nutritional as I was not feeding my hay and even thought I had loose mineral and sweet pro blocks out, I did not have my normal mineral blocks out and the hay I had to buy was crap.
After 3 days of waiting for Rosies calf to get better I got a cocktail of shots from the vet, and I don't remember what all they were, within 24 that calf was up and running around with the rest. He still had one leg that twisted out slightly.
Fast forward to now, looking at the calf you could not tell he had ever had a problem and he is a super nice calf. I messed up banding him, when I put the band on Rosie was getting P.O.'ed and in my trying to hurry I only got one, so had to cut the band off and didn't want to push my luck with an angry mama, I didn't try for a 2nd band so he is a bull.
Yesterday my neighbor who bought my white bull calf came over to see his calf and brought a friend. That guy picked out Rosie's calf and wanted to buy him for a bull. I explained the full story on the calf and told him I would not keep him as a bull, and wasn't real comfortable selling him as a bull. He insisted that was the calf he wanted. So I told him to think about it and I would not be cutting him till after Sept 1 when they come home from the summer pasture.
What would you do, let him buy the calf as a bull with having been told the full story, or refuse the sale. I will get more selling him to this man than I would get sending him to the auction.
