Hi all, I'm not sure I'm really allowed to be here, I don't own a cow but about a dozen or so young heifers live at the back of my garden. I am absolutely obsessed with them and last spring watched a feeble calf of maybe 2 or 3 months old maybe younger grow into a lovely 6 month old with her Momma before they took him into the barn for winter! Sadly so far "Crazy Cow" and "Momma" haven't come back and I fear the worst! I so fell in love with Crazy and wanted to make the farmer an offer but with nowhere to keep her and being a single Mum I knew that was out of the question!
I never had any contact with cattle before I moved to the country and couldnt believe the peaceful feeling of happiness and love for such a large beast! I always saw them as things that may look over a gate but you shouldt go near! Who'd have believed how friendly and loving they can be once they know you. The Momma and baby fed from my hand, altho Crazy was still feeding a bit and being weened almost by the 6 or 7 month mark (but then not sure of actual birth) The Momma was top of the pecking order, she bosses all the cows even larger and the older ones and I had to keep her in control plus several fully grown cows if I wanted to pet the baby. Obviously when she was tiny, Mum was by her side but gradually she moved further away then all the calves used to play together in the field! I got Momma as I called her and Crazy Cow to warm to me so I felt safe and we had a trust between us! I often wonder if they went to market and broke my heart over it and don't know how I got thru 5 months waiting for this spring to ssee if they came out again. The farm is about 4-5 miles away so the farmer gets them transported to the marsh land near the river for the spring and summer months. This has been the case here for years and years! But I do worry about the river.
Anyways no Crazy or Momma but a new herd of 12 young yearlings have appeared I'm guessing about the same age Crazy would be now! As usual theres one special cow who follows me everywhere, comes to me and feeds from my hand! Guess what? just had to call her "Daisy" very original not!
As I say I'm in the UK and things are different here, not many keep cows as pets, but if I had a house of my own and not rented accomodation and I had land, boy would I have a cow, first thing I'd do lol!
I am known as the "cow whisperer" by the locals or Crazy cow lady and I don't mind. I hope you don't mind me being here. I am just so enthralled by these wonderful creatures and have been trying to learn as much about them as I can! I have so much footage with Crazy last summer and now my Daisy! Cows especially Heifers are such beautiful faithful endearing souls, but obviously I've had the odd bum butt when trying to deal with lots at the same time. I now know to watch my back. It's amazing the different personalities they have.
Soooo I'll pop by and read advice now and then if you don't mind. You never know Crazy Cow may come back, the farmer is putting them to pasture little by little, he ssems to add 4 or 5 new ones every few days, so maybe Crazy is still in this world! You never know I may be lucky enough to have a property one day and room for one (at least) and the knowledge to have my own cow baby! I dream of being in Dakota or somewhere like that, you're so lucky. The UK just care about animals for sale at market not for keeps. I wish I could've bought Crazy or at least paid the farmer to save her, but don't think he'd have agreed! But as I said, she may still be with us as she was only 6 or 7 months old last autumn and he thats not the time for market (I can't even say the words) I pray at least she lives for a couple of years and has a heifer of her own. Wouldnt that be nice, another little light brown and white cutie. awwww sigh, do I need help. It's serious lockdown here and we're only allowed out for food shops once a week I live alone with daughter on parent share and often alone and these girls make my day happy, I'm so lucky they live the back of my garden. They're a gift! I'm Julie by the way, and sorry to go on, I just love my cows so much even tho they'll never be mine
Sorry also about spelling its 5 am and I can't sleep so just watching today's cow footage, oh dear I need help!!!
Love to all who love cows, Julie
