Now that it is being recommended that everyone who goes out in public should wear a face covering, I’ve altered my mask instructions just a bit again.
To make a mask that is more protective of others to slow the spread of the virus (in case you are infectious but don’t know it because you don’t have symptoms), use poly/cotton for all the layers. Cut the pieces 6” by 8”.
To make a mask that is less permeable that MAY be more protective, cut one layer of flannel. Because of the thickness, cut the pieces for the mask 7” by 8”.
Parts needed:
6” by 8” (for lighter mask) OR 7” by 8” for less permeable mask
1 piece for outside layer
1 of contrasting poly/cotton weave fabric for inner layer
1 of lightweight poly/cotton fabric for lining (can be the same as the inner layer fabric)
1 of midweight interfacing (fusible is the easiest to work with, IMHO)
¾” or 1” wide elastic
1 piece 16” long
1 piece 12” long
¼ or 3/8” wide elastic, 7 inches long
Placket
Cut one, 1 ½ “ x 4” of lining fabric
Seam binding
2 pieces, 2” x 4 ½ “ of contrasting poly/cotton or flannel
Aluminum nose band
1 piece, 1 ½ “ x 3 ½ “. Carefully cut from an aluminum soda can. Fold in half lengthwise and round off edges.
Instructions:
1. Press mask pieces; sew or fuse interfacing to lining.
2. Press under one long side of placket piece. Center placket lengthwise on wrong side of flannel/outer layer, approximately ¼” down from raw edge. Sew close to turned under edge. Layer fabric as follows:
a. Contrasting fabric and flannel (or outer layer) right sides facing each other
b. Lining fabric next to contrasting fabric, interfacing away from the contrast.
3. Sew 3/8-inch seam on both long edges. Turn right side out and press flat. Insert aluminum strip inside placket. Sew across short ends of placket, through all thicknesses of fabric.
4. Sew channel for elastic across the opposite long edge of mask. Stitch through all thicknesses of fabric: 5/8” from edge for 3/8” wide elastic OR ½” from edge for ¼” wide elastic.
5. Form 2 pleats, press & stay stitch about 1/4” from edge to hold pleats. Insert narrow elastic and stay stitch across both ends to hold.
6. Press under 1/4“ on one long edge of both seam binding pieces. Center seam binding on each outside edge of the mask. Fold over excess length to back side of mask. Stitch 3/8” seam.
7. Turn seam binding out and press. Press excess length under. Pin elastic to edge of seam, the 12” piece along the bottom edge and the 16” piece along the upper edge. Fold seam binding in, then turn elastic out toward the outer edge and pin to hold. Sew close to edge of seam binding, through all thicknesses.
To wear, slip both elastic straps over your head. Adjust top strap so that the mask is snug against your face. Tuck bottom edge of mask under chin. Bend aluminum band over nose for closer fit.
Wear whenever you are out in public. Wash your hands before putting your mask on. Wash your mask in hot soapy water between wearing it. An alternative, but less effective way of disinfecting the mask is to spray it with a minimum of 70% alcohol.
