I have been lurking here for a while now. I raise goats and have a few horses. We moved here 8 years ago and the town has encircled us in that time. It has become quite bothersome and now some cases devastating, so we look forward to moving as soon as possible. I’m sure some of you saw my little blurb about the town sending an exterminator to spray my beehives. Not mine per se, but I had a mentor that had 2 hives under our lilac bushes and the powers that be decided that bees weren’t allowed in town limits and instead of posting any notice, they just sent someone to spray them. I’m legally grandfathered in so technically I can have any livestock I want in theory, but getting reimbursed by any government entity for their unlawful destruction is probably harder than pulling a tooth from an angry Jersey bull.
I had a Livestock Guardian Dog named Saphira to protect my goats, ducks, and chickens from our abundant wildlife, but the town went after her too with a million noise ordinance violations. Again grandfathered in, but this all fell on deaf ears. The last straw was when a police dog crossed through my pasture and got distracted by a baby goat. Saphira having a good hundred pounds on him easily kicked his butt. I was ordered to get rid of her. Many tears were shed and I sold her to a woman in Tennessee who was happy to get an experienced guardian. I don’t think they will go after my goats or horses because I have neighbors with some, but my horses are (completely tame) mustangs so who knows what craziness could happen if they figure out what their brands mean.
I have been wanting a dairy cow for a while now, my five children go through 3 gallons a week and would probably go through more if available. But in light of recent events I’ve been resigned to wait until we can move. It looks like that time is coming and I’m going to be thrown off the deep end! My husband and his boss/friend have been talking about going in on some property that was available next to the (boss’s) family farm. It was a “you have to make this amount of improvements to the land in a certain amount of time” sort of deal. And now they just found out that the grandparents are willing to sell the farm. The catch is we need to buy 150 cows. So here I was with a dream of a dairy cow and borrowing one of their beef bulls in exchange for fostering any bum calves on her and now it looks like I get the whole farm. Lol
