I was just out in the barn - an hour ago - Rowie was outside, had been laying down resting in the sun, then eating some hay and then all off a sudden she starts kicking at her belly and running in circles like something was after her. Then she stopped running and kept kicking up at her stomach. She was also holding her tail out and up like she was going to poop/pee but made no effort to do so - no straining at all. She then started sprinting around and stumbling in the snow as she kicked up at her belly and sides.
She is now back in the barn in a stall. She holds her tail up and out almost constantly now. She will stand there with her head lower than normal looking rather concerned and then kick kick kick at her stomach - followed by running and thrashing around. Then stands. Then another round of kicking.
She will be 6 months old in 3 days.
She gets approx 2 gallons of France's/her dam, milk a day (give or take a few cups) in 3 feedings. The only difference was this morning she got 7 1/2 pints (usually she gets 6 1/2-7 pints in the morning - but that shouldn't make a huge difference I wouldn't think.
She gets no grain. Alfalfa and grass hay - same hay she has been eating all fall/winter.
She drinks very little water - has water always free choice - but prefers milk.
Has had chronic pellet poop for months - we've had this issue in other calves - seems to resolve when they are weaned from milk and need to drink more water.
Called the vet clinic - they said probably belly ache/constipation - give 1/4 gallon drench of mineral oil. Is this the best thing to give? She had pooped at least twice over night into this morning. Not sure if she's pooped since being outside this morning/afternoon.
