I have a Jersey heifer that I picked up in Oct. of this year. I didn't have any history on her at the time but was told through email conversation that she was in milk and that they hadn't had her long and had not milked her. I went to see her, bought her (very cheaply) got her home with the intention of eventually breeding her and figured I go ahead and milk her and see if I could bring her back into production. I figured she had some age on her, she was in pretty bad shape and needed/needs some weight. When trimming her feet I found a sole ulcer that I was able to fix with the internet and phone help of a dairy trimmer in MN.
Long story shortened through her tags and a shoulder brand I was able to trace her to the dairy she originated from. Here is where everything changed. She was born 2/8/18 and has never calved...
I have been milking her OAD since she arrived. Her milk has came in better and is delicious.. I am getting almost a half gallon which is wonderful in my coffee. Not a lot I know, but we're not really big milk drinkers. Mainly cream crazy and her milk is half cream.
I free feed her Burmuda hay, we have no pasture. In the morning when I milk she gets a half gallon scoop of wet COB (corn, oats, barley with molasses) a couple hand fulls of BOSS and a flake of good quality Alfalfa hay. The COB is only 8% protein so today I picked up a bag of 12% sweet feed from TSC and shredded beet pulp.
I would like to add the beet pulp to her grain in the morning but not sure how much to safely start out with?
She was with my mini bull and covered on 11/22 so hopefully bred.
I have had her tested for BLV, BVB, Johne's, Q-Fever and she is clean.
BANGS vaccinated as she has a tag.
She is A2/A2 BB AB and a dream to milk..
I also am going to be able to register her.
I honestly don't know how in the world I got so lucky and ran across this sweet girl.
I am absolutely thrilled and really really hope she is pregnant.
But back to the reason for posting. How much shredded beet pulp should I start her out with? She likes it, I gave her a hand full sample and she ate it (dry)
Thanks a million
