Three weeks ago I went outside one morning and DH said to look at what he found. I never expected to see what it was. There were three small dogs. We live way, and I mean WAY out from any towns and these guys had no collars on. The Border Collie x had made a nest in some tall grass just on the other side of our yard fence under the pole light and had bedded down for the night with what appears to be her half grown pups. We have several dogs and do not need more! So, I opened the gate and let them in.
Momma dog
The momma dog was getting real fat, me shaking my head because I know what that meant. I took her to the vet yesterday for a complete physical. The vet fell in love with Pepper the Border Collie X. The vet did an ultra sound and let me watch. Pepper was so good during the whole thing. We saw several puppies that were well developed, vet thinks they will be born within a week. Vet also took blood for heart worm test, and fecal swab for worm test, both of which were negative. She said Pepper is about two years old. Now I'm on puppy watch. I have no idea what she was bred to, or how big the puppies will be. Pepper is a small dog and should weigh no more than 20 pounds, if that. She weighs 42.5 pounds! Holy Bat Cow!
Pepper has been my shadow for the last week, I hate to admit it but I have fallen in love with that little girl. She's the smartest thing and so loving, she's happiest when sitting by my feet. She has found a forever home here. We have to take the two smaller ones in to the humane society real soon. They are smaller than Pepper, but way too hyper for us. They are smart playful pups and will make someone great pets.
The vet and I have talked about the future plans for Pepper. She will get her shots after the new puppies are born, and weaned, and then spayed once she has dried up. I told the vet that I was going to ask a question and having milk cows is the influence behind the wording. I asked if she was sure we only have a week as Pepper is not bagged up yet. Lol Yep, she's sure it will be soon.
I'll monitor her temp once a day to catch when it drops to 99* F. Once it goes back up we'll see puppies! What have I done! Here's more pics because she's so cute. She's in a really big crate with a beef knuckle bone. Look at that tummy.
See how small she is.
Anyone need a real cute unborn puppy?
