Hi I am new to all of this me and my wife have had a jersey cow on our farm for about 3 months last week she had a calf I had no idea she was pregnant I thought she was just fat. We are trying to homestead yet we both have to work right now to help get things off the ground.i was not planing on having a calf yet we are in the process of building a barn and have it laid out to have a hole quarter of the barn dedicated to a dairy and the rest to our work horses. So in other words I planed on breeding her in the fall and getting all into milking next year when we wear a little more further along. Unfortunately on a farm you never know what may just happen. Our cow Ellie unexpectedly had a calf we call little bit she is a heifer and we plan on training her to milk. But right now I have no idea what I am doing and the mom Ellie is not halter broke. The amazing thing is this is her first calf and she has let me milk her no problem and will stand for me and not even move until I tell her we are all done. I have built a little coral for her and the calf to stay in out of coral panels. currently the calf is a week old and seams to be doing okay I am worried about her getting scorers tho. I am trying to get Ellie to milk once a day and doing it in the evenings. So what I do is bring Ellie in the pen around 6 each evening and milk her leaving just enough for the calf then leave them over night then the next morning before work I let Ellie out Sephora ring her from the calf so we can milk her again in the evening and repeat the process I am building a calf pen now because the horses are not to fond of little bit and donโt really know how to act with her also my fence can easily hold in a grown cow but she slips right Thro the wire so i have the calf in the pen all the time. I am really worried about two things the health of the calf and of the mom not getting mastitis. Also I need advice on halter braking the mom and the calf also. And do yโall think the calf needs anything else with her other than water and her mothers milk at night for now and I have a small bowl of grain in for her to mimic her mom. I am just worried about them and want to be a good owner.
