Our Great Pyrenees is getting old and has some issues with arthritis. She will be 11 in June and she still thinks she can take on anything. She is weak in her legs and can no longer put up a good fight. She used to jump our 4' high fence no problem, now it takes her several tries to get over it. I wish she would stay in the main house yard. We have to lock her up at night because of a large coyote population. They would tear her up.
I was really wanting to get a pair of Anatolia's to "help" her out. Well, my friend who just happens to live across the road from us has a litter of GP puppies that were born on 12-1-2017. I have watched them grow up from a few days old and they are huge! Today DH and I took a large round bale over there place. We were talking and I had DH go look at the pups. One of the little guys started barking at us. He was being a big brave guard dog! Well, I was smitten with that boy. He showed some real potential.
I told DH that we really need to get a pup for our girl to train. We got to take him home right then! She wouldn't even take anything for him. She was thrilled that he would be close enough to watch him grow up. He weighs between 25-30 pounds (just guessing) and has huge feet. If he grows into those feet he will be a massive boy. His name is Max.
Our DD spent a half hour with him and a piece of cheese and has already taught him to sit, lay down, crawl, and give her a high five. He is so smart and willing to follow simple commands. Our old girl will shake her head no when asked to sit! When I had him out after dark he growls if he sees something moving around. He is going to be very protective, and he doesn't chase chickens! He is used to them.
We have had coyotes hanging around in broad daylight trying to get our birds that go to the main large pasture. Our old girl will jump the fence and go out there to stand between the coyotes and the livestock. In a couple of months there will be two of them going after the coyotes!
Just because she's so darn cute here's Sosha our old girl telling me no! Just click on the pic. I will have pics of Max tomorrow!
