I'm struggling to get some idea of how to start. I'm going to include a google map of our pasture. We have 25 acres total. I've put letters on the map and an indicator of the corral gate where they have to come and go for water. (I'm just not thinking we can haul water, so not an option at this point) So please use the letters to help indicate where I should run electric fence. Mostly I'm not inclined to put anything more permanent than a t-post in until I get the hang of this.
I have thought about a lane east/west between I-K and J-L, then paddocks off of that lane to the north and to the south?? Or divide the bigger front pasture with two lanes running east/west??
The thick band of trees that divides the pasture really only has shade, no water. My concerns are the north side has no shade if we use that in the heat of the summer. I don't want them hanging in the barn, as they make a poopy, soupy mess out of it, so I prefer to shut them out of the barn. The south & west sides have great shade.
The pasture is roughly 825 feet north to south (top to bottom) and I don't have a measurement the other way. This summer I will have 3 cows in milk with 5 babies between them, two steers, a heifer and a horse. (The horse doesn't have to graze, just throwing that out there) On the far left side of the pic, our land ends in that north/south tree line. The nice strip of grass to the left of the tree line is the neighbor's.
And letter "F" is in red at the upper left hand corner. Hopefully you can see it.
I KNOW this is an art, but I just need help getting past the stuck/starting part. So throw out the ideas, I'm all ears.
(The "opening to the back" is where you can drive a vehicle through to get to the back pasture)
Hopefully I've pointed out all the pertinent things. I will update this post as I fill in things I forgot.
EDIT: I do have permanent fencing on all the perimeter. Sorry, if that wasn't clear. Yes, I have step in posts and wire and will move them, etc. I just meant I wouldn't put in wooden posts until I was more sure of where to put them.
blaithin Of course, I have a phone that doesn't even do apps. Although I love that idea. Once I upgrade I will definitely look into that. Very cool!
elnini The wooded area is pretty thick in most places, I might be able to run a wire in a few places.
simplynaturalfarm We have a water tote that we use when we take them across the road for short stints. We have to put it in the back of the truck and it becomes a total pain in the butt. Guaranteed as soon as we have water in the tank, we need the truck bed for something. So I'd rather not haul water. As far as tanks/hoses/etc. I'd like to pass on it this year. Once I get a bit more comfortable with how this will work, maybe next year. Plus, most of the time, DH will probably be moving them, so I need to make it as simple as possible.
rosalind I love your layout. I hadn't thought of that.
