Hi everyone! While I was on vacation, my husband and our neighbor adopted a couple jennys from the blm. Both of them were supposedly bred before being gathered in February of this year. Our neighbor's jenny dropped the cutest filly yesterday morning. Before she dropped the baby, that poor gal was big enough for them to live in if they needed to. She was enormous! I've had horses my whole life but have only had one mare and that was 20 years ago. My questions are, have any of you had a donkey that you know was bred or maybe you didn't know and woke up to a super cute surprise one morning, that didn't get a great big belly? I watch Bella for hours every day. I THINK I see bouncy baby movements and every once in a while I will see her kick or bite at her belly like she is annoyed at something going on in there and that has been in the cool morning before the flies are a bother. Also, in my watching her constantly, I've not seen her come into heat and I'm pretty sure I would notice something up because we have a jack that still has his man parts but does NOT have access to her and I would think she would show interest in him if she came into heat. I know I could have a vet out to see if she is but with her still being new to domestic life, I feel an invasive procedure just to appease my impatience is completely unnecessary and unwarranted. She has free range of our property and gets alfalfa and Bermuda everyday and never eats it all. I also know donkeys are easy keepers(says the gal with the FAT jack that has to live by himself because he is a glutton and needs to be on a constant diet) and with what she is eating, I would think if she were not bred, would be putting on more weight and fat but she isn't. She looks great and just has what looks like a hay belly. Any insight will be so appreciated!
