Janene, what area are you in? How well does your cow do alone, (I guess except for her calf). I would prefer to only have one. Legally, I can't really work my way around legally having have 10,000 sq ft dedicated pasture per animal. If it is her calf, maybe no big deal, but I am also supposed to have this pasture land 100 feet from any building except a shed, so using the land directly around my home is a no no. That is why I would be interested in a Jersey, so I could be sure to have plenty of milk with just one cow.Samara
Samara-
When we were in TX Dolly for awhile was my only cow. She did fine...but she had lots of attention from me!
Right now I have a almost year-old steer, Dolly and her calf.
The steer and (when weaned) calf will go someplace with pasture to 'finish out'. That means Dolly will be alone again.
Each cow is different, some are OK with being alone, some are not. I would definately get one with 'manners' who can lead, tie and are 'people friendly' (i.e. enjoys people company!) for a small acreage and being an only cow.
I am in SE Nebraska in a small 'village' of 150 people. Yes, they had to 'vote' whether I could keep the cows or not.
There is neighbors all around me, except out back. There the town ends and fields begin. If I lived in the middle of town, I wouldn't of been able to put the cow there.
Personally I'd much rather be on a farm...but circumstances at this point is why we are here.
I am just grateful to have my cow...it is nice to look out the window and see her in her little 'pasture'.

PS I also compost the manure....away from the neighbors!
