When I was about 40, I got a green broke 3 year old gelding. I had a friend who helped me with ground work and her daughter was a newly graduated horse trainer, so we got cheap lessons for the horse, DD and I. But the young fella had been abused and was hot and aggressive (mostly from fear). And was in love with his blind mare companion so it was nearly impossible to ride him at home.
He went to my friend's for the summer and I could ride him there, but that wasn't very convenient, either. And then I got a heifer, who fell in love with the horse. She'd even mount him when she came into heat and you should have seen the look of abject horror on his face! Too funny.
Then the heifer calved and I started milking and I suddenly had no interest in riding anymore. I waited it out for a few months, then prayed for an answer. That if I should sell him that he would go to a place that would be blessed by him and that the gelding would be blessed by his new life.
He's been gone for about six years now and has 4 teenaged girls who love him. The oldest shows him and he does okay. I drive past the farm where he lives on my way home from work and occasionally get to see him out in the pasture and he looks so relaxed and so happy. And I know that my prayers were answered in the best way possible.
Thank you for sharing your girl's story. I pray that you will find an answer that will satisfy you as well. And that no matter what happens, everyone involved will be blessed.
Just a suggestion - maybe trade her for the older, more sedate horse you were looking for to start with?
