Yes, that's right, this is one of those sliced open stories horses seem to feature mainly in. I only have myself to blame, I obviously jinxed my mare. My friends are much more active on their horses and their horses always seem to be getting themselves into random scrapes with random injuries. Meanwhile, mine, who is just a fat, shiny lawn mower 99% of the time, has been an indestructible titanium tank. Of course I had to say that and now this happened...
Best we can figure is she was doing some running in the storms, or maybe she just finally had bad horsey foot placement luck. Either way she's cut her foot to heck and back. Whether it was wire or not who knows, there's also a grain bin bottom in where she was that the landlords left there that has metal edging and old rusty ancient equipment things and who knows what else that these accident prone equine beasts can find. Either way, whatever it was, she's cut.
Bring on massive amounts of text messages to all friends who know horses more. Help! What do I do! I only know injured cows!
As an example, my eventing friend says clean it out good and use an antiseptic ointment. I ask if udder budder would work until I could get into town today She has no clue what udder budder is.... Or Blue Kote.... But I was given my list of things to get today and thanks to the local drug store managed it all for under $25. However after soaking it tonight it looks like I may need some vet wrap after all. It's a bit more flappish appearing now than it was yesterday.
Here are some rather icky photos from tonight. Hosed her down with cold water and cleaned it of dirt and straw, then soaked it in a bucker of warm water with Epsom salts and Oil of Oregano for 5 or so minutes (until her patience ran out!), and then sprayed a Dettol mix on it. Finished it up with some oats and turmeric. As you can see, after the soaking it was obvious it could be deep enough to earn a wrap.
Now the Calvary will be here tomorrow with the special proud flesh mix my ingredients are for and for further advice. I'm swinging back and forth between hope because everyone's horse seems to have injured themselves this exact same way at least once, and total AHHHHHH it looks awful! I'm hoping after advice tomorrow I'm more consistently chilled. But if anyone more horse savvy than myself on here has some other tricks they think my benefit my poor Sassafras please feel free to share and save her from my horsey ignorance!
