Yeah, that's what Sweet Pea looks like. She is due in 10 days and she is getting bigger and bigger and bigger by the minute...like scary bigger and all in the last 10 days or so.
Anyway, my neighbor who thinks it's funny that I dote on a cow, said something that made me start worrying. She is a Jersey...probably 750 to 800 lbs. 2nd calf. She is bred to a cross bred bull...he is from a Hereford sire and red/white Holstein/mutt dam. He said that the Holstein may produce too big of a calf for her. I know it's too late to change it but it's not too late to prepare for the worst. She is due in 10 days. I thought I made a good choice because I own the bull's dam and she has 50 lb calves...9 so far...and the bull's Hereford sire was a low birth weight bull. When I bumped the calf a few weeks ago I could feel the long bones of the calves leg...and it felt really tiny...but she is really starting to get rotund which has me worried my neighbor is right And poo on me because I could have bred her to a purebred Hereford but didn't because I was hoping for a 3/4 dairy heifer (as if I would be that lucky)
I have been breeding cows on a small scale (herd size hovers at 25 - 30) since 2007...and have never had to pull a calf. And only seen it on a video. Assuming worst case scenario, what should I have on hand? I was just looking at her when I tucked her in her stall....her vulva is loosening up and her udder is coming along a bit...her barrel is huge and round, so not slab sided yet..I think she'll go the full 10 days.
Also what should I have on hand for treatment of MF or Ketosis...I have no experience with that either...
Yeah, I know...I'm just freaking out because she's my little pet...can't help it.
