What a wonderful thing - I can rarely grow a good pepper. Inspired by my addiction to throwback's site, peppers, sustainability etc, I built a small greenhouse (small compared to hers LOL), and our tomatoes and peppers did not get planted til 3rd week of June due to life . . . so everything was late. But we have picked 3 cooler fulls of peppers, pickled 18 pints of peppers, and I have a dehydrator full and another cooler FULL of a variety of peppers to do something with. Padron, new ace, flavorburst, pimento, pepperonicci (they went wild!), shepherd's something or other and another one she had recommended and then went with our typical jalapeno and then a hidalgo sorano which is a lot hotter than I remember . . . and a bell pepper that is insanely hot that looks like regular peppers and oh boy did we have some tears here when chopping them
The 7 and 9 year old cut up the first 2 coolers of peppers into slices to dehydrate, and the very last pepper 9 cut into, she decided to take a bite out of. Ends up some type of hot pepper that is shaped like a wrinkly bell pepper and 7 came in holding it and said 'I am sorry, I didn't know this was a hot pepper." I looked at it and said "That's not hot" and took a bite and about died. 9 year old tried milk, and bananas, and cream cheese and I washed my hands over and over after oiling them, and then 7 yr old rubbed her lips with her hands and her mouth was burning, then I inadvertently rubbed my eye and my eye burned and then 5 yr old drank 9 yr old's milk and where her lips touched the cup started burning LOL. Then DH came home and we showed him and he licked the pepper, then nibbled and then took a bite and said it wasn't bad, (and here I felt like a huge wuss LOL) and then about 10 seconds later he made a wheezing noise and said it was the afterburn that was so bad and he had glasses of milk etc. and it burns for a while - I have NO idea what kind of pepper it is as i didn't remember planting it!!
We have a triple batch of salsa simmering, double batch of dills on ice, another double batch of bread and butter salted in the fridge, and I am getting nothing done outside - time of year when you have too much to do and not enough time, but it is wonderful!!!!
