Ok, now that Daisy seems to be back to normal pretty well I will ask the question that I was about to ask before she went downhill. I had only just noticed it in the few weeks before she got sick so was only just starting to wonder what to do and then of course that all went on the backburner while we worked on keeping her alive!
Got some pics of it this morning so that you could see what I'm talking about. It is in between the front and back teats on one side. It is, as you will see, quite a bit smaller than the four normal ones. But it is big enough that I am worried it will be a problem later.
From my research, both on here and through google, there seems to be divided opinions on it. From what I've read if it is snipped young then mammary tissue won't develop to it but seems that if you leave it then it can develop mammary tissue that will produce a small amount of milk and potentially cause mastitis issues etc. This is what I'm most concerned about. The cosmetics of it aren't an issue, just the worry that it will be a problem with freshening.
I'm inclined to want to snip it off now while she is young but just wanted some opinions based on the photos whether you think it the best thing to do. Looking at the teats you can see a small indent with a white spot on the four normal teats that look like 'teat openings' that will develop whereas the extra little one doesn't have this - it is just a totally pink thing.
Will cutting it off now be the best thing to do?
Also want to dehorn her as don't want the danger of horns especially around children so that is my next 'google project'! But if anyone wants to chime in with what they consider the best way of doing this please do! At the moment they are only just small, about 1cm in length from the skin and fur.
Both removing the extra teat and dehorning would, I'm sure, be best done before the weather warms up and the flies come out.
Thanks for any thoughts,
Nita
