THe 3 hens I have that like to stay on the nests will peck and it hurts. The one time I told my 4 year old "She won't peck you", was the time the hen proceeded to peck her and it drew blood. Now nobody believes me when I tell them but even I won't reach under a hen anymore unless I have a long sleeved sweater on OR wearing mittens or gloves LOL.
I hate it if the birds fly at me, even though they are never doing it intentionally. I hate it when they get all riled up and flutter around and that is what those leghorns did. THey would be flying in the air flapping all over from any disturbance.
I have a doozy of a purple bruise on my knee from chasing an escapee who was in the milking area. Just enough moonlight that she was refusing to go through the door into her coop. Then when she did go that way, one of the many barn cats decided to sit in the way ARGH. I psssted the cat and it looked at me like "Psst yourself." So I booted it, turned around to try to catch the bird in the dark and landed on a frozen pile of cow poop and hopped on one leg muttering about stupid birds, stupid cats and frozen poop *G*
I have a culling question - I noticed the other day one of my skanky RIR hens - YES HENS - was constantly jumping on the other RIR hens. I have been just confused as to why ONLY my RIR hens left (and only 4 of them now) are bald on their backs. They never get feathers back. DH said maybe my rooster prefers them . . but I never see him on them. I only have one other rooster and he stays on the roosts most of the time as he is afraid of everything. Since the day I saw the HEN on top of the other hen looking like full contact vent breeding, (and then she jumped off and the hen did the shake yourself after being jumped on by a rooster), I have seen her do it to multiple other hens. . . I asked DH can they be confused? Can they be 100% hen looking and still be a rooster (this is absolutely a hen by visuals!)? Or is she an aggressively dominant hen? I noticed when she goes back to roost at night, if another hen even looks at her, she'll peck it on the head. . .
