Hi guys, I'm new to the board but I've been pouring through threads for the last several weeks.
Our Jersey heifer, Blossom, had a bull calf yesterday afternoon. She was a little slow to get up afterwards, but after 5 or 10 minutes she mothered up with her calf really well. She drank probably 15-20 gallons of molasses water and looked bright-eyed.
In the evening we put her in the barn and milked a bit out of the quarters that her calf didn't suck. Shortly after that, she went down with obvious signs of MF.
We got the vet out last night to give her CMPK by IV and got her up again. She was up for the entire night, though still quite unsteady on her feet. She didn't move around much, but was happy to see her calf, which we locked away in the next stall.
This morning she went down again and we got the vet to come look at her. He did another bottle of CMPK by IV, and another subcutaneously. He also gave her a bit of dextrose by IV and we got her up again. We turned her out so she could (hopefully) eat grass. She's quite disinterested in eating and drinking - won't even touch grain. She wandered around a little bit and is laying down again. Her ears are warm now, but she obviously does NOT feel well.
I didn't see her chew her cud at all yesterday, and I'm now wondering, would her lack of cud cause her to go down again? I don't have a tame enough cow to swipe one from, I only have a small amount of yogurt, and a trip to town and back would take 2 hours. Would sourdough starter work? Keifer?
I'm totally desperate. I'd be so grateful for any advice!
