I am going to advertise some of my jersey cows for sale on an internet site. I'm looking for advice from Australian members on how to price them - although I notice prices vary a lot according to region so it might be difficult to gauge.
Anyone got an idea on:
1. Stud registered jersey cow DOB 16/10/2006, not in milk, probably is in calf (AI'd to jersey & then put out on pasture with beef bull ... I haven't been able to observe her heat cycle since but I will assume she is in calf as she has never had any problems.) This will be her 3rd calf. Good mum never any problems with mastitis etc or calving, will foster, good size teats for hand milking, not halter broken but will do anything for feed. Vaccinated. Very nice looking cow. Has been hand milked. Raised on her mother on pasture & has never had huge quantities of grain. Always had her minerals supplied. Came from a stud/dairy where the old bloke had fantastic show winning, milk recorded cows but steered away from cows that produce an enormous amount/are fed an enormous amount & then have their udder blow out. What I'm trying to say here is that she is well bred & raised to be a healthy & long lasting cow.
In the summer these sort of cows were going for up to $1500.00 but that was fresh. (This is the cow I dried off because I thought she was due to calve & she was empty ... duh ... ) So what do I deduct from that price for a cow that is dry & it's now winter?
2. Stud registered jersey heifer DOB 15/09/2010 raised on her mother on pasture until she was ready to go in calf herself (!) Extremely well grown, healthy, good looking girl. I am presuming she went in calf to a low birth weight murray grey bull on June 1. This is the heifer that yells her head off when she is bulling & there wasn't a peep out of her when she was due last time. I had her AI'd with jersey semen twice & the woman who does it told me both times she didn't think she had got the straw in the right place as the heifer was very strongly pushing her out. She advised me to put her with the bull. She is not halter broken but is quiet, used to being handled, stands in the bale & can be rubbed all over her udder etc. Is not dehorned but I can do it if required. Has always had her minerals supplied. Is vaccinated. Comes from a top producing/good looking/good temperament line.
Can anyone give me suggestions for realistic prices for these cows please? I am west of Bowraville & it is very hard to get a house cow locally.
