Picked up a Jersey at the sale barn today. First calver, sweet temperment. The guy had to pull a stillborn last night and brought her to sale today, never milked and I doubt she was fed or watered.
Her udder is HUGE. I got her milked fairly well in 2 quarters, got a 3rd milked (now it won't milk anything, no letdown into the teat, but in the quarter itself.. strange) and the 4th one is too engorged and full of edema and I can tell she has a raging case of mastitis. I have been out there massaging her and milking her out, trying to get the bag deflated and softened some.
Its the 4th quarter that worries me. It is severely swollen/engorged and I can get maybe a drop for a few squeezes then nothing. Whatever is in there, is blocking and I can't break it up.
I was thinking a canula to get the quarter drained enough to help with inflamation and then keep it milked out every few hours for the next few days to help move things along and get the milk flowing. I should only need to use the canula once. Her udder is so hard, hot and inflamed I fear permanent damage if I can;t get it drained and things moving. I'm going to continue to massage, hot compress and milk her around the clock till I can get this under control.
She's such a sweetie... has stood like a rock the whole time, even moving her feet when I need to massage between her leg and udder. Breaks my heart someone would let this happen out of ignorance
Edited to add-her udder has gotten to the point where it stretched so bad the dead skin is sloughing off so I'm hesitant to use anything aside from udder balm and bag balm.
I'm going to load up on Vit E and garlic at the store tomorrow. I ran out
Do yall have any other suggestions to a course of action? I'm just hoping to get her udder healthy in all 4 quarters at this point. She is a terrific cow
