Hard to tell when exactly Sidsel calved. At first I thought yesterday but after bringing the calf in I'm not sure.
I was feeding the goats and calves and glanced over at the other animals. I was trying to coax Argos and Belaphron back into the Sheep Shed but they wouldn't cooperate. I saw Sidsel (due on the 21st with her second calf) over on the hillside in Roll Bale Hollow. Then I saw a white and tan goat wandering along the fenceline....wait, I just fed all the goats and nobody was out...no way, she couldn't have...but she had. She'd calved much earlier than expected.
I headed over to check and see what it was. With that much color I assumed a bull calf but it is early..it has to be a heifer! Spunky thing. Colorful, too. No way was I catching it...oh no..what's that big thing coming towards me?!
Well, I did come back an hour later with my handy dandy halter ready for a tackling match...lol It is supposed to snow tonight..should be our last snow collection of this winter. *crosses fingers*
I caught the calf napping;
Made it very easy to "catch."
Here is Sidsel. She broke her ankle when she was 6 months old. We spent the money to have it casted (a bit late because the vet suggested we splint it first). She gets around okay but as she ages and gains weight it doesn't look so good. We never know when it is going to be her last. Sidsel is 3 years old last Sept. She did not sack up much at all!
Her last calf was born in the barn in the middle of winter. She got tired of walking with us and wondered off. Not concerned in the least that I was taking her calf. She saw me take the calf and she should come in for milking. If need be, I will bring the calf to her in the barn so she can be sure of where it is. Her last calf is Oscar, who lives with John.
Here's the answer to the question you may have at this point ;D
It's a girl!
Everyone has to check out the new baby....
L-R Juness, Libertad, Argos and Belaphron (see the resemblance in Juness and Belaphron still)
To give you an idea of where we came from...in the last picture there is that group of trees part way down the hill. That is the had of Roll bale Hollow. Near the middle top portion of the picture is a fenceline..she was along there. We had to go down in the valley and up the hill.
It's a girl! Three heifers and a cow left to calve this month...plus four does unless Snickers finally got down to business while I was up here.
