I had planned for Mona's calf, Norman to leave this morning (while I was milking Mona) to his new home....BUT...the people getting him were just not ready. If I would have insisted they would have come and got him but I would have been worried that they wouldn't have treated him the way he needed right away and I would have felt like I betrayed a friend (Mona I mean) so I agreed to keep him another week. I am taking them a list of what they need to get ready for him and taking them a book I have called "Raising a calf for Beef". I will separate him from Mona mid week if I can and get him started on a bottle since he hasn't had one yet. He is doing so well right now and it is so cold out and snow on the ground and more predicted through the weekend that I would rather wait for warmer weather in case he and Mona stand at the fence touching noses all night when I separate them. The extra pen is between Mona's and the milking barn and is strong (livestock panels) and has a great shelter well bedded with straw, but I am afraid he won't use it and will just want to be with mom. At least there is a common fence and they can see each other..maybe it will be a good way to make his leaving a little easier..a first step.
Meanwhile, Mona is just wonderful to milk and I am getting about 3 and 1/2 gallons every day..a little more in the mornings than at night and no problems with her behavior at all.
I am not a person who handles my plans being changed well at all...I guess that is me wanting to control things...but I think this is for the best. I want to do right by Mona's baby. The people gettting him are family (my husband's side) and young so I have to try to make allowances for them too.
