I did not think Dextrose was prescription product - let me ask DH (he's in surgery so I will ask him a bit later)
That is the expensive version of the stomach pump - DH has a cheaper plastic version he likes that you can also get from Fleet farm in the gas section for about $35. I will ask him for a link to the J pump as I can't remember where we got it
Magnalax has 10.35 oz magnesium hydroxide per lb and you add it to water and drench the cows. Milk of magnesia has other ingredients but I can ask DH if it could be used. It is cheap to buy as magnalax (about $5 for a 1lb tub of it) so I am sure it is much cheaper than milk of magnesia.
Your vet won't fax in a prescription? I can imagine him not doing lidocaine (we can't dispense that ourselves), but flu, dex and epi are not that insane of a request Maybe if you talked to your vet about the problem you have with the distance and if you have an emergency with a cow you would like to be able to start treatments while he is driving there, especially if he is on the wrong side of the country at the time of your emergency. If he has valid concerns about client relationships you could ask if he is in the area to stop in and check your cow (we only charge $10-20 stop when we are in the area). We have to have a valid doctor/client relationship here in order to dispense prescriptions and that means we have to have "seen" the place and animals at least once a year, so for people who are a long ways away or don't transport cows, DH does a walk through once a year and then has does phone consultations rest of the time. It does end up costing them $35 for the walk through and then $20 for the stop but the rest of the year we can discuss problems on the phone.
