soon to be steer... ah ....itty bitty ox??? on the farm ;D. Last week someone on HT posted about a guy having a dexter cow & a normandy (sp?) cross cow (both with calves at side) for sale. I called the neighbors, who ended up driving 6 hours each way, bringing home all 4. The cows are the cutest, little sweet-hearted fatties you've ever seen. The speckled one's calf is a heifer. The dexter mom brought a 6 month old bull with her. I took one look at him and was LOST. He's the cutest thing I've ever seen. Short (he's a shortleg) blockie, thick. He's been raised in the guys front yard!! kids (human and goats LOL) chickens, dogs... The plan had been to turn him into burgers, but..but..but... LOL... Long story short, his name is now Elroy (my boy elroy, from the jestons.. hey he was short & stocky) We'll band him this weekend. There is a new old timey farm heritage/draft animal group starting up here. Think a fat red-head and her wee black ox will fit in? I've got a place for him (away from the jerseys and the dairy does) since I'm leaving his horns, I don't want any horn/bag accidents. I'll have to get pictures of him, he looks just like a teddy bear! Dexters aren't very big to begin with, with him beging short legged, I'm not sure how tall he'll end up. At this point (6months) He's not much above my knees, but built like a bricks**t house ... do I NEED him??? no... but did I WANT him..better believe it... I called the hubby (trucker) and told him he got me dark chocoate for valentines. LOL.
(I've always been drawn to the dexters. Last year I got Betty Mo (dexter/jersey cross) lovely to look at, but she & I just didn't hit it off well. She has however become a wonderful milk cow for the neighbors. Her calf Binny is so cute it hurts. Again... a small stocky, short legged thing) NOW, maybe Elroy being so young and use to being handled, I'm hoping for a dexter of my very own to hug on.
