I hope everybody's holidays went well.
I have been discouraged about my cows. They have been here since August, and they seem pretty much the same size as they were then, except they have lost weight around what would be our lower backs, but I think that they were being fed a lot of grain over there (in a beef herd). I can't say that I have seen a lot of change in their tummies, however, so I am discouraged. I haven't even wanted to work with them much because it would seem like a betrayal to get them to trust me and then turn around and sell them when they are not capable of giving milk and so all that would be left would be meat. (That may sound silly, but there you are...) I would have thought that even if they didn't get pregnant til the last minute before they returned, they would have started showing by now? Sometimes they look bigger, but the rest of the time, they really don't.
My husband is thinking that if we end up selling these that we should get mini-cows. I have been reading a little about them and it seems like it could be a good idea. They would go well with our mini-horse & mini-tractor.
I do have one question: the other day in a fit of complete discouragement because I had spent all day trying to do two things and neither worked out, I wrote about the fact that I could not find hay. Well, I found some and bought two big round bales knowing the cows wouldn't eat all of it but not thinking what to do with that part they didn't eat, but it did tide them over til I found some better. Now I have a few hundred pounds of old now-wet hay lying around. What can I do with it? We have a field which needs building up (it's kind of bowl-shaped and clay-ey soil) and I would like to simply put it over there, but when it dries out (if it ever does), will it will blow away? Or is there anything else I can do with it?
Thanks!
