Hello,
I am very frustrated with my "first" family cow. We have had Rose for about 2 months now almost 3. We bought her from a family that had 3 milk cows and they milked them all with belly milkers. However, something had come up and they weren't able to milk anymore so they were having to sell their cows due to a family business keeping them too busy. So we bought Rose and her heifer calf that was 6 weeks old at the time. The sellers told us you could hand milk or machine milk Rose, but she hadn't been milked in a year, and her calf had never been handled. So being the novice family cow buyers we bought her because she was a nice looking cow and her calf was even nicer and she was very reasonable priced.
I have her at my grandparents barn until we get our built, which I am hoping will be within the next month! I have been trying to wean Daisy the calf for a couple weeks now, she did break out over the weekend.
Rose is being a little hard to handle it seems. I am not sure if its just because she is out of practice, or because of her calf, or she just has a rotten attitude. When would you determine to sell her? This morning at milking time she smashed the fire out of me when I was trying to put her in our "make shift" milking area, she kicked and then she just won't be still. I take her feed from her, put her in time out and well Ive smacked back a time or two as well. She can see her calf and touch her while I am milking so I don't think she has a nerve problem I believe its her attitude, she has also pawned the ground at me a couple of times when I was trying to fix her feed and was next to her calf. I am very frustrated at this point and just need some advice on if I should sell her and look for another, move her calf to another location, or just how to give her an attitude adjustment. What would you all do? At this point I'm really regretting my purchase and am wondering if I have made a big mistake. However, my children love fresh milk and won't drink anything else!
sorry for the lengthy post and thanks!
