I'm beginning to think I made a $1600 mistake and I just want to cry. As I have mentioned in some of my other posts, I was told the cow I bought produced 6-7 gallons of milk/day. I have NEVER seen her bag full. When her heifer calf wasn't nursing right the first few days after birth because she couldn't figure out the nursing thing we were getting only 3 quarts of milk per milking, now that the calf is nursing we get about half of that, or less than ONE gallon a day. She calved last week on the 16th, so from what I was told she should be huge by now but she is not. Last night I separated the cow and calf for about 13 hours and this morning I go out hoping for a full bag, nope-bag is still soft and less than 2 quarts from 2 quarters, I let the calf have the other two quarters. I'm beginning to wonder why I even bother to milk since there is so little even when the calf is off the cow. We are feeding the cow half a bale each of alfalfa and grass hay and about a large coffee can full of oats/corn twice a day, so she is not underfed. She has plenty of water available. No, the cow isn't holding up on me. I want to call the guy who told me about her production and demand my money back. I didn't go with a cow trader but at least the cow trader promised to replace the cow I within two weeks if it wasn't working out but with this private seller I am SOL. We are going to put her out in our Kosher weed field tomorrow but I'm not expecting any thing. I was so excited about having a cow and milking her but now I am so frustrated.
