The BIG NASTY HORRIBLE EVIL AND MUST BE SOOO HUNGRY MEAN KITTY aka Mountain Lion showed up again on Saturday night and stole a calf out of my calf huts. What a horrible Mother's Day morning it was at bottle time. It looked like a blood bath occured in the hut. The lion drug off an almost 200 pound calf around 350 yards and after eating some of it, cashed it in a hole. My poor little baby. My other calves seem ok but I just keep thinking how horrible it must have been for them to see their little friend killed and drug off like that. My husband has figured out how to put a tight fitting lid on the hut porches to keep the lion out. Thank the Lord for my ingenious husband figuring this out and installing them tomorrow. I am worried that the lion will come back again and kill someone else. The department of wildlife has been out trying to trap it and we have actually been sleeping in the horse trailer trying to get a shot at it. The first time it came I chalked it up to a freak incident. Now that it has come again we know we are on the food route. Understand that I live in town just 1/4 mile from JC Pennys, Home Depot and King Sooper. There are 4 elementary schools within a mile. The DOW is not interested in publishing anything about this. This same lion has been seen stalking people within a mile of my place. I am buying a gun to wear on my waist while I am out feeding and choring. DOW says it is going to be close to impossible to remove it due to it being in town and so close to houses. Any advice? The first calf it took weighed close to 400 pounds. By tomorrow night my calves in huts will be safe again. But, once they are safe I am going to be worried about my other cows and weaned calves in the larger pens. I know they are animals but they are my friends and I am having a hard time thinking it's just part of the life cycle. Any ideas? It is not feasible to lock them in the barn at night. We just don't have that type of set up. Remember I am right in the center of town and not out in the country. I can't believe that this Lion is living in Town! Dow thinks it weighs between 130-180 pounds! Yikes.
