When I went out to get my 4-yr-old Jersey, May, to milk her tonight I noticed her chin seemed swollen. I had put a cow control halter on her (it was the only buckle-on halter I could find around here, from Tractor Supply) about three months ago. She's pretty ornery and has torn up two rope halters.
When I got her in the stantion, I saw a bit of blood under her chin and that things didn't look right, so I unbuckled her halter and took it off her nose and she flipped her head and the chain litterally tore out of under her chin. It had imbedded into her skin! I felt so bad! I must have had her halter on too tight? Or it rubbed her chin and it swelled? Anyway, now she has two gaping wounds in her chin, that were bleeding (dripping) while she was in the stantion. I really don't know what to do. She won't let me look at it too closely, and I really don't know what I could do and don't want to make it worse. Should I flush it out with anything? I think it's just in (or through) the folds of skin there under her chin. She was eating good in the stantion.
I'm inclined to leave it be, since it's going to drain pretty much strait down. I'm worried about flies and maggots, but not sure what I can do about those. Are there any homeopathics I could give her? I feel so guilty and worried. She walked away like nothing was wrong, but what should I look for in the next few days as it (hopefully) heals? She is pretty much dried off and I need to get her bred (I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do that too, and now I want her over this before I do that), and I will have a really hard time getting her into the stantion again, but I'm going to let her dry off totally now, probably, and just watch this wound.
