When we brought Maggie home 4 mos ago, I knew that she really needed a hoof trim. The woman I bought her from said she thought it best to wait until she calved (which is hopefully any day now) so that she didn't abort from the stress of being in the turner. She has been out on our small pasture, so they haven't gotten any longer, but I just keep waiting until she calves so we can get it done.
Well, today I noticed that her right toe on her right front hoof is cracked on both sides...if it were to crack all the way off it would be half way up her toe. This am when I first noticed it she seemed to walk just fine, but tonight when I was bringing her into the barn she started limping a bit by the time we got there.
Can anyone tell me what I should do? I have the number for the hoof trimmer. Should I call and have him come and look? Is it a really bad idea to do it now...since she is eminently calving? Should I keep her in the close in run so she doesn't walk too much?
A bit of her history...we got her 4 mos ago, she was vet checked at the time and he said she was about 5 mos bred. She is 3 or 4 years old, has calved before....PB Jersey. We bought her from a woman who was going to start a calf raising biz with Jersey milk, but after two months of milking two other girls twice a day she decided it was too much work and sold all the cows she had bought. So, we don't have an exact AI date.
Maggie is so super sweet, and I hate to think that she is hurting. Please help me figure out how to help my sweet girl. She has become so loving since she came here. When we got her we could only touch her udder, not give her any pets. I'm sure she was just someone's milk machine. Now she loves to be brushed and loved on...all in 4 short months. She follows us around like a puppy:))
Thank you all so much for being the wonderful resources you are!
