Folks,
I'm sure a lot of the people on this discussion board have found it by way of Joann's wonderful website, www.real-food.com or keepingafamilycow.com, but I'm also sure that there are others who've found it via a search engine, links from elsewhere, or just random surfing, and have not yet encountered Joann Grohman (except as the "Joann" who moderates this board) and her wonderful book and website. If you haven't, do yourself a favor, and head on over to the link above! You're in for a treat.
If you've got any interest in cows at all -- and if you didn't, you wouldn't be on this board -- you owe it to yourself to get a copy of Joann's book, KEEPING A FAMILY COW: "KFC" for short, not to be confused with that fried chicken place... There's more information about it right on the website, and you can even order it directly and securely right from there. I got one for myself (and I don't even own a cow... yet) and one for a friend, and wouldn't be a bit surprised if I had to buy another one or two, to pass along to others!
The website also has a number of interesting links (including one to this discussion board, which you don't need if you're reading this), a bunch of reader photos (man, there's some good-looking cows in this world!), info on other books Joann's written, and my personal
favorite: the Heifer Diary. This is an ongoing account, written by Joann, of her own experiences with her family cow, Helen, and the other inhabitants and neighbors -- human and animal -- of Coburn Farm.
I confess, I'm a Heifer Diary addict.
The entries are daily, and it's posted once a week, on Saturday. Written in a style that makes you feel like you're sitting with Joann over a cup of tea (or a glass of Helen's wonderful milk) at Coburn Farm, listening to her tell you about her day, it's also full of useful hints, tips, and examples -- the kind you'd have to live on a farm for an extended period of time to learn by experience.
In that way, it's a constant continuation, an extended sequel, to KEEPING A FAMILY COW.
It's also sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, and occasionally has brought tears to my eyes. Once, when Helen suddenly went down with milk fever after giving birth to Emily, it nearly made me climb into my car and start driving up to Maine to help! Fortunately, I realized in time that they undoubtedly had enough help, from people who actually knew what they were doing... ;-) But it can have that kind of effect on a person.
As I say, I'm an addict. But if I'm going to be an addict, at least I'm addicted to something helpful, and health-ful, on many levels. If you've read Joann's book, visited the website, and enjoyed the Heifer Diary, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, please do! I'm not getting paid to make this plea, either. I'm writing this because I've come to have a great deal of respect and appreciation for Joann, and I hope many others will come to respect and appreciate her, too.
Visit the website, if you haven't already (http://www.real-food.com or .
Buy and read KFC, if you don't own it now (and if you do, they're really appreciated as gifts -- voice of experience, here).
Take some time to experience the Heifer Diary for yourself (make sure you can read undisturbed for a while!). I'm convinced you'll be glad you did.
