I had a dexter a few years ago that I got rid of because she was a big pill all around. Not to dis dexters but that I believe they can be a very stubborn breed in general although there are exceptions ( trying to avoid a stoning by all the dexter owners:)) In ox training dexter oxen are noted for being among the most difficult to train because of that trait. The dexter I had would try to kick my brains in and it went on for way to long. I tried every trick I could find from leg tying ( she tried to tear the barn down) to a belly rope and on and on. I finally got so mad I one morning after an hour of brushing and loving BEFORE putting her in the stanchion in which after she went in and we proceeded to milk she threw a multitude of kicks at me meaning to do damage! I grabbed the broom in lightning speed and beat her for a solid 10 seconds. I hope no PETA people are reading this. I could never get a good whack at her because of my tight quarters but it made such a racket that she never kicked me again! I only whapped her on the butt never on the spine but I made as much noise and made her think I might kill her if she kicked me again. This was not a decision taken lightly. This cow would NOT respond to love. The kicking had gone on for 5 weeks before I threw a tantrum about it. I guess in her herd brain that the biggest cow throws the biggest tantrums and up to that point she had done the biggest ones. She was so much more respectful after that. I am not promoting doing this BUT if all else fails for a long time............ still have a friend who is upset with me after I told her the story but she is not a cow person and can not know what it is like to be threatened to be killed by an animal WAY bigger than you. Good luck:)
