Wow Farmerswife... I never meant to imply that I thought you didn't care... If I thought that I wouldn't have answered you at all. Sorry if you misunderstood. I am really trying to brainstorm here with you... I am just saying that if you have 7K to spend then I (and others) might have something to work with trying to help you formulate a plan... but if the 7K is just in the future- if you save the litter-and isn't real money today (what I thought you said in your first post) then there might not be anything to do... so I am still trying to figure out.. Is there available money, or not? If my choice were grain or litter the litter would NEVER, EVER, EVER be an option. So hopefully that shortens up my answer to something manageable.
And to answer your question; No, I do not eat commercially raised poultry, beef or pork, which are all raised here for exactly the reasons you pointed out. I also have huge issues with how the animals are treated in commercial operations. My chickens are part of the farm and they are loved and respected and provided as natural a life as I can give them as are all my animals. When we harvest them for food we are careful that they are humanely killed.
I do throw my dead of natural causes chickens to my hogs... and if they lay around long the others will have already pecked them to pieces and I don't have any objection to that... it's the other crap that is in commercial chicken feed that freaks me out... including medications, non food byproducts, etc. I am not a purest or an idealist by most standards but one thing I can do for my family is provide good clean food that is free from things I do not want them eating and I bust my butt and spend a good part of my income to do it.
Hope you find a solution to your problems.
