Since we have had a LOT of spring *SNOW* the grass has really started growing in FAST!! All the girls have had at least a 'touch' of Grass Tetany..but Bella got it the worst...right in the middle of Bethani and I being very sick. There was no way I could go out and drench her the way I knew she needed....so, amidst my fevered fog, this is what came up:
1 bottle of CMPK (for IV or Sub Q treatments)
IV set
Magnesium (epsom salts)
B complex
When I read the CMPK bottle it had 10.8 g Calcium to 1.6 g Magnesium.....I KNEW that was WAY too low for the mag that I needed to get into her...so, I measured out 10 g (1/2 tsp epsom salts = 500 mg magnesium) mag and added it to the bottle to dissolve(I will add no less than 12 g next time). Then I pulled 10 cc B complex and added it too. I made sure the epsom salts were totally dissolved before I administered....well, at least I tried to. When all was said and done, there was a bit left in the bottle.
Using DTHM's method of administering CMPK sub Q, I gave the whole bottle to Bella...who at this point *let* me stick her! <she wasn't so nice when it started running in though.....the rest is a fog>
Within about 3 hrs she was resting and cudding, by evening she was eating some grass hay and the next day was snacking on alfalfa, just a bit. Normally this kind of improvement takes about 5 days (or something close to that) Within 2 days she was eating her grain and alfalfa as well as the grass hay.
I have also still been giving her daily b complex shots, and will for at least another week....<she must be getting used to them, she doesn't even jump anymore>. Since she was eating her grain within the next day I started adding the extra 2-4 tbs of epsom salts to that and she is still getting it to this day. <I'll probably continue until this until we get past all this crazy weather!>
Just thought I'd share as it dawned on me this set up might be more readily available for folk that cannot get everything needed for the Ketosis (low mag) drench.
