We've had Abby and Tilly for almost 2 weeks now and we've become pretty used to our routine. This morning Tilly seemed a little restless while I milked her and tonight she was downright rude! We did have some visitors that made a lot of noise so I am pretty sure she didn't like that but she kicked at me a couple of times and it took me (and hubby) a while to get her calmed down and not kick when I grabbed her udder. I was looking at it...it was pretty tight when I started to milk her. Now her udder is already lopsided because she has one quarter (front right) that is out of order and the other front quarter I guess did not get nursed by the calf because I only got a few squirts out of it for the first few days and nothing for the past 3 or 4. That quarter looks a little round (about the size of a softball). It isn't really hard or lumpy...can anyone tell me if it is normal? Like what should a quarter look like that has been nursed a little by a calf but pretty much dried up? The "out of order" quarter looks like there is nothing there...her teat is up close to her body...it does not hang down at all.
And is this bad? I have been trying to milk it but nothing comes out. The only reason I am asking is because I don't know if I would recognize a problem if I saw one, and Tilly seemed like she didn't want me to touch her udder at all. I didn't know if a bad quarter would affect the whole udder...or was she just having a bad day?
I did get kicked once is the fray and I was a little "gun shy" after that. I needed as much coaxing from my hubby as Tilly got!! She kicked my wrist and they asked me if it hurt. I said it felt about like someone hit my with a baseball bat!! It wasn't really bad, just bruised my pride and shook my confidence.
Just a little side note...I've been milking Tilly for almost 2 weeks...she's the first cow I have ever touched in my life! I hope the morning goes a lot better than tonight!!
Thanks ya'll!!
