sallymcd - you are absolutely correct. The larger side does have a 'ring' on the back where it looks like an extra teat was removed way back when. It used to look like a little button (which was cute!) now it's ALLLL stretched out and looks more like a round pocket that's sewn shut. An interesting thing now though - her edema is totally even on all sides. Her udder looks HUGE, but balanced. That makes me think that maybe the crooked edema is from her always laying on the one side and not from the extra teat. She literally hasn't layed on that other side for weeks. I always catch her laying on her left and the shavings are NEVER on her right side; always her left. I think that was a huge influencing factor in her disproportionate udder from the start. Hindsight is always 20/20, right! When I first started seeing this problem in her, I never thought it would be something as simple as 'Oh, she always lays on her left'!
Her edema is even WORSE tonight - her bag juts out from about 3 inches below her vulva - straight out. I feel so bad for her. I read somewhere that edema can increase the chances of dystocia because the cervix is 'chunky' rather than being smooth and round, which decreases the inner diameter of a fully dilated cervix. DH is at work tonight, so I'm hoping she just pops that calf out on her own in between my hourly checks. I have my baby monitor set up in her barn so I can hear her bell and any mommy-moos she might do. She's definitely close now. She's switching from one foot to the next in the rear and looks miserable. Also, her sides finally sunk in and she has a pot-belly beneath. Keep us in your thoughts tonight, OK?! Hopefully I'll be able to post some pictures of a happy cow/calf in the morning!
