Hi all, I am sorry that this is my first posting! I joined a while ago but just haven't had the chance to have a good look around and introduce myself. My name is Leanne and I am in Australia, this is a fantastic site, I couldn't find anything like it on any Australian websites.
My problem is a little confusing. Doris, my jersey cow appears to have calved and is down with milk fever. I had the vet out to her last night and she has some conflicting symptoms. I will give a back story. This is my first cow, and first calving.
Up until 2 weeks ago I thought she was possibly in calf, due in September. She got out and ended up with some cows down the road (no bull) and mounted another cow like she was in season (or bulling, not sure how you say over there) so we presumed not in calf. We left her in with other cows until we could organise transport home (she went for a long walk).
Yesterday she was down, legs splayed out underneath her. The people where she is helped me roll her over so she was sitting better. They are beef people. Doris still did not want to get up now that she was in a better position so I called the vet.
Vet came out and examined her, said she appears to have calved from trauma to her back end, there was blood in her rectum and the fact that she has milk (she was dry previously). She had a palpitate (sp?) and through rectum could feel where placenta joins. She then went through other way and couldn't get past cervix, it was clamped shut. Intermidently, Dorris was also straining like she wanted to push something out. The vet was a little worried she may have dropped one calf but perhaps still had a twin inside or some retained placenta.
Walked around paddock today and could not find a foetus, placenta or membranes but we are in a fox area so they may have taken.
Last night Doris was given a 350ml 4 in 1 bag under the skin (calcuim, magnesium, phosphorus and glucose) which is treatment here for milk fever apparently. The posts I read here mostly talk about a paste. I gave her another one this morning and am awaiting the results of the blood tests.
Sorry for such a long post! Most posts here say molasses is good for milk fever, should I try her on some in a bran mash or something? She is eating and drinking and although she is still down, she is looking bright. Dolomite here is a feed supplement and I have a book that suggests feeding it to cows with milk fever.
What I want to know is, she is approaching 48hrs down, is it likely that she is going to recover from this? Any is there anything else I should try feeding her? I don't know Doris's history, I got her from the pound. She was in calf to either a Jersey x Angus bull or a Belted Galloway bull.
Thank you in advance for any advice.
