Took me a day to post here. Sparkle started going down thursday pm. during the day thursday she was running around looking for her calf. she calved last saturday. thursday was the day when we could use her milk and not have colostrum. thursday pm my daughter led her in and her calf nursed while i was milking the others. i watched her and she looked off. brought her in and she didn't want grain. felt her ears and they were cold. milk fever i thought. didn't milk so she could reabsorb milk and calcium. called the vet and he would be out in the morning. vet came out and gave her calcium and drenched her. had mastitis in one quarter gave massive amounts of antibiotics. news to me as she was clean 12 hours before. she got up was led to the milking stall milked her out and led back out to the barn and that was where she layed .
she tried to get up for a while during the next day but couldn't get her front legs under her. we put straps under her front and back but she wouldn't stand. when they hoisted her hind end up tears came to her eyes and we were done. no life left. i couldn't do it to her anymore and made them let her down. so sad, a beautiful lovely cow gone!! vet still doesn't know what it was that killed her. uggghhh!!! she was such a wonderful cow.
She calved out a beautiful heifer a week ago 10 days early who is a smart little bugger and is nursing on our millie who calved a month ago. i give millie a kiss every time i pass her for saving this little heifers life and feeding her. rest in peace sparkle and thank you millie!!
