I can't believe it! I've been trying for MONTHS! No matter how sneaky or surreptitious I thought I was being, she'd see it at the last instant and bolt. I've been wanting to RIDE her (wow, what a concept, riding your horse!), but I can't get her tacked up until I have a halter on her to hold her, and I had been unsuccessful in the haltering part.
I don't know what was different this morning, but when I was giving Wind and Horus their BOSS treats, I decided to try again. I guess I'm just stubborn. I got the halter, and I even SHOWED it to her as I walked up, then I tucked it under my left arm, gave her another handful of sunflower seeds, put my right arm over her neck, brought the halter up with my left hand, and voila! She was haltered! She didn't even twitch. I can't understand it. So maybe in the next couple of days I'll get around to fixing her bridle, and get on her. It's been a while since anybody's been on her back, so hopefully I won't have a rodeo. I'll put the "safety saddle" on her for the first ride, just until I'm sure she won't buck or do something stupid, then I'll use her regular saddle. The "safety saddle" is an old roping saddle with pommels that extend out so far that you CAN'T fall off - my legs tuck underneath them almost. It's the one I used to use on Aiesha when she was feeling frisky (she liked to buck to show her enthusiasm... ). I just hope it fits Wind. Wind has lower, wider withers than Aiesha did, by far, but I guess if the tree part (or is that called the fork? I can never remember) sticks up a little too high, that's better than it being too low. Anyway, wish me luck!
