I didn't want my first post to be a 911. At this point the urgency has simmered down a bit, but still need advice.
My Jersey stepped (I think) on her front teat (only has one). It became so swollen I couldn't milk her. (I've only had her 3 weeks, first cow after doing all my research, etc.) I've been doctoring the wouneds, and Vet said give her anti-biodic (2 dosages)- which I did (injectd into teat from the natural hole there). I have carpel tunnel now, or some such thing, cannot feel my fingers from the 1-2 hour long sessions it takes to milk the one injured teat (which at times dribbles out), and my hand doesn't shut into a fist now. The very tip of the teat is also injured and swollen which is causing the most trouble. Yesterday I decided, out of sheer necessity, I needed help milking her, so I'm using the injector used for the anti-biodic as a sort of cathetor. Once I insert it, the milk freely flows (no foul odor, chunks, or discharge). She doesn't like it, but tolerates it, tonight was my fourth time to use this method. So my question is, does any of this scream out to anyone that I'm going to damage her beyond repair? Does anyone have suggestions for her, and my arms/hands/fingers (I know the book says "drink the milk" (I have some left from before the meds and I'm drinking it) along with taking vitamin E. I've used warm water, cold water for her swelling (and mine). The vinagar in the water (along with other doctoring) actually seems to be doing the most good (or it seems), and the wounds are healing, but when I squeeze, still no milk, so I cath her.
Hope this qualifies as a 911, sure feels like one to me. Thanks all.
