Oh help me!
I haven't posted in awhile...altho I read faithfully and appreciate all of you so much!
We are the first time cow owers....soon to be first time calf'ers (hopefully) and I just need input, I guess.
"charlotte" is our first cow...we got from the dairy...she is great! She was due on Jan 30 and we are now over 2 weeks late. I read my KFC book like it's the bible...I sit here poring over posts and pictures and then I go out and stare at her very now familiar vulva area like it's a work of art or something
I just called the man who owns the dairy and he said it's a little odd that she hasn't calved yet, but not totally worrisome . She was AI'd so it's pretty definite when she was bred.
All the signs are there....her udder has massively enlarged -especially in the last week- her vulva area is very slack and puffy- she has a clear discharge at times and she is very wide. I can feel the calf move when i push on her side, so that's good.
I don't want to call the Vet unless I HAVE to. She is great , but very expensive and things are very tight around here.
Oh, I just feel like crying and that is crazy , but when you've waited on pins and needles for 3+ weeks, you just get emotional. I'm already nervous over the birth...hoping it goes well and all.
I know you all can't do much and you hear this all the time, but thanks for listening !
Maybe I should post a picture? I don't know how, but my son does
p.s.
this is charlotte's 3rd calf and she is 4. when i first got her in Oct. (remember me? the cow with the hives? she was nervous and very standoffish...but, now she loves me! she loves me to scratch her head and back and brush her and I can't bear to let her down by assuming she's fine and not look for things that would show otherwise. I think she'll be a good mom too...she's adopted our Lab puppy and he loves her. It's so cute they lay out in the sun together all snuggled up and she bathes him endlessly while he's licking her face. I should get a picture of that too!
bye!
thanks for listening!
