Hello, I am new to a message board so bear with me. I bought a Jersey cow that was supposed to be a first calf heifer (although I think she looks older) and she has a six week old calf. When we first bought her the calf was only a week old and since her udder was still very swollen, I didn't think much about it since her calf was so new. However, several weeks went by and I finally contacted our local vet. who gave her four days of anti-inflammatories and antidiuretics. I faithfully gave all the shots and could not see any change in her udder. The vet didn't know what else to do. By the way her calf is freely nursing and we milk her out twice/day also. It's hard to know how much milk she's giving because of the calf, but the calf is doing quite well and we get over a gallon a day. She does not appear to have any soreness in her udder and I have been massaging her like crazy when I milk her. Her udder is firm--especially the foreudder --I would say it has the consistency of a human calf (pardon the pun) muscle. She is a funny milking cow--esp. on one side where I'll milk her and the milk will nearly stop and I keep milking for about a minute or so and I will start getting milk out again. I don't have trouble with milk let down--it just comes and goes as she gets empty. I will massage with one hand and milk with the other--one teat at a time to get the very last milk out but her udder always looks and feels like she needs to be milked.. Has anyone used that cream that has the Japanese mint oil in it? Does that help? I hesitated buying it since it is pretty expensive. Maybe this is just how she will be. Any ideas? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
