I wanted to share the good news with everyone here on KFC. I have been reading on this forum for almost a year since our family decided that we wanted to have real milk. I haven't posted much, but have spent most of 2009 on this forum, reading and trying to gain some knowledge of cows!!
Well, now I have my very own Jersey milk cow!! ;D I bought Stacy's cow, Maggie and she delivered her to me last month. Stacy gave me a crash course in milking, to which I am very grateful! She has been there for all my questions and advice on dealing with Maggie as she was getting settled into her new home. Stacy you're a wonderful person and I'm so glad we got to meet, if only for a short time!
We decided to change Maggie's name to Gracie. She was pretty confused about the whole name change at first, wondering who-in-the-world is Gracie? But, she's so smart. . . now she comes when called.
Gracie is 4 years old, in milk and was AI'd in November for a September calf. So far, I haven't seen any signs of a heat. We're hoping that it took! We're getting 2 gallons from her with once-a-day milking. We are using the Surge that came with her and it works beautifully. It's just a wonderful thing to have all this milk.
We were really wanting a small Jersey cow, since we have limited pasture and Gracie is just perfect! We are so pleased with her size. The manure she's producing will be put to use on our garden and raised beds. We just know we're going to have the best tomatoes that we've ever had this year!
I feel like my days are more organized since she has arrived and I've been able to keep up with all the milk, so far. We've been making lots of butter, yogurt, mozarella, cream cheese and cottage cheese. I would love to know how to make sour cream. Anyone have any easy recipes??
What's really interesting is the fact that everyone we know keeps telling us how we're all going to be sick from drinking raw milk! People are really brainwashed by the media. So, I'm just going to enjoy my "real God-given milk" and let the critics continue drinking their chalk water! ;D
