Hello! My first post to the forum and am hopping you experience cow folks can give me some advise. We are looking at and for our first dairy cow.Leaning toward the smaller Jersey.I have found to people within 1 hr of us that have some options.
Option 1.Right now this guy has a 7 mo old heifer who is purebred but not registered, can be but for additional fee. A two yr old in her first lactation with only 3 teats and not milking very much.Poss bred back but not confirmed. Only being used as a nurse cow for foster calves. These are not his cows, he has made several trips from the Oregon area lately and then sells them. Neither are halter broke. He wants 600 for the calf and 1000 for the 2 yr old. He is also looking at bring another trailer full back and will be asking 1100-1300 for these cows. Some will be bred some will not. All are coming out of dairies, some are organic. Feel bad as he raised his price on the 2 yr old from 750 -1000. Don't know why, maybe he forgot he already quoted the 750 but still....
2.A farmer up North of me is looking to ease his winter work load due to traveling for medical reasons. He has some pure jersey, jersey x Holstein, and jersey x swiss. All are bred to his pure jersey bull that is an AI bull out of a top Jersey cow. He raised all of these girls by bottle, he said they are all like pets, all are halter broke and trained to lead, he works with them and scratches them all over their belly and udder to get them used to being handled. They have all been vaccinated and he said would be TB tested before leaving. These are all AI calves.
We would also like the older kids to be able to use the cow/calf for 4-h.
Ok....so what are your thoughts?
Jennie
