2 of my kiddos didn't have school yesterday and when they went out in the pasture to get the horses, the 2 mares got into a bucking/kicking fit, and they ended up hitting back hooves pretty much dead on and Charity my DD's mare ended up with a cut/split all the way up the back quarter of her hoof. kids came running out of the pasture yelling that Charity couldn't walk so out we went to see what was going on,
I have never seen such a thing, where you could actually see some of the 'inside' of a hoof.
Immediately called the vet as she was bleeding and clearly in pain, and with horses feet theirs no self doctoring here, "no hoof, no horse" basically.
So now Charity is on an antibiotic for 7 days, had a block put in her hoof, and the piece of hoof wall cut off and it's all wrapped up, Have to leave that on for a week and he'll come back out in a week to check it and then we'll have to put something on it everyday until the hoof grows back, So DD isn't too happy that she won't be able to ride her for about 3 months,
But that's not all the drama,
On Sunday we noticed that Ginger (DS's mare) had a sore on her bottom lip, so checked her out and some to find out it's a "HOLE" went all the way through and into her gum, the only thing we can figure is she smacked her mouth on a T-post.
We got it all cleaned out, and were keeping an eye on it and would call the vet if it looked nasty or was getting worse, we did this twice a day, pulling out any bits of grass or hay that would get into the sore spots, she didn't seem to mind and did very well considering all the not so enjoyable treatment she went through with having west nile. We had to bribe her to come to us after that,
We had the vet look at her also and basically he went in a did a more thorough cleaning and I have to keep up with the cleaning and she is to have a "pelleted" complete feed, no hay or grass so that hopefully it heals up somewhat and he'll check it when he comes back out to check the other mare,
So now I have one horse that limps around, and the other refusing to eat the pellets and staring at the cow's hay,
Hopefully she'll get hungry enough today to eat, if not I don't know what I'm gonna try, (molasses didn't work)
