Well, it was an ordeal but we welcome little Woo (Window Of Opportunity) into the world. Mother and bull babe tentatively well but being watched attentively.
The Woo at 3 hours (just a little bit gorgeous?)
Marieke conceived last November when our Hereford bull got over the gate without our permission. He was only there with the heifers for 2 hours maximum (the window of opportunity) and I honestly didn't think much of it. Marieke was just 15 months old and I had intended to wait another 3-6 months before breeding her.
I missed the birth because I was at work, as I ruefully predicted , but I'm almost glad I did because the calf was huge and my brother-in-law and nephew had to pull him out in the end. I am worried about Marieke. She seems OK and she's passed the placenta and is eating and drinking (had a bucket of molasses water too), but I can't work out if she has blood in her poo or if it's coming from her vulva. She has blood caked around her anus but that could have been flicked there in the battle to get him out. I suppose if she'd had a haemorrhage of some sort there would be fresh blood and lots of it?
Anyway this is the little family
And Uncle Joe too
He is absolutely fascinated and obsessed with his nephew and I had to kick him out because he was trying to make Woo play with him. I think he's more excited than anyone ;D. Marieke is very tolerant of him, fortunately.
Anyway, I'm posting here for the moment (not in the birth notices) because I'd love to hear from others who've had to pull the calf out and what risks are loitering in the aftermath......
Thanks,
Grannie Trina
