Hi All,
I just had to share this...because the force behind it has just stunned me.
My husband and I have four hens and a rooster...this is our second flock and I couldn't imagine not having my chickens. We planned on getting a couple more this year(or rather, 6-7 chicks, in anticipation of a few of our hens going the stewbird way) so we have enough eggs for us and his grandfather.
Well, while complaining about the cold snap a few weeks ago in the company of a few coworkers I mentioned having chickens...which quickly morphed into a free-range discussion, non-gmo, organic and so on. Well, that afternoon, three people(and two weren't involved in the conversation!) approached me about buying eggs! That if I have extra please let them know, and if I were willing to get a few extra hens that they'd definitely buy eggs once they're producing!
So..now, well, I guess we're probably going to invest in at least a dozen more chicks to raise for the coop(maybe more...still working on the hubby there) probably easter-eggers and a few Buckeyes
The reaction has just floored me. Of course, I had a few people approach me about milk too...but that was after we found a new home for Clover. One of the guys that's interested said he was telling his wife about it and before he knew it she had cartons ready, labeled with their name and phone# and wanting to know what the max/week was! He said she was crest-fallen when she found out I didn't even have the chicks yet!
Maybe there's hope for the rest of the world yet. I mean, these are people that certainly wouldn't strike me as being even remotely aware of the difference between supermarket food and "real" food!!
Maybe this will be the start of the family farm that we sooooo desperately want. Chickens...cow(s)...pig(s)...turkeys....
Now I just have to make sure I can keep then birds out of my garden(which will be approaching 2000 sq ft this year ;D )
