Well, it looks like we have a new dog.
DH was headed into town one day, when he spotted this little guy on the side of the road, out in the middle of nowhere. He stopped and tried to catch him, but couldn't. While he was stopped, one of the neighboring farmers stopped and told him that the dog had been out there since the previous afternoon (we'd had a blizzard that night).
So, DH called me and I came to where he was, bearing dog food and live trap. It took a while, but hunger overcame all and the little fellow finally caught himself in the trap.
He's a poodle, and appeared to have never been groomed -- he was a matted mess and he reeked, but was too scared and nervous to allow us to touch him. He promptly escaped the large dog crate we put him in. We weren't overly anxious to get bitten, so we let him run loose in the yard.
We contacted the Humane Society, the Sheriff's office, the newspaper, and the radio station, and (of course) nobody claimed the little fellow.
It took a while, but we finally managed to gain some small amount of trust. Just this past Sunday, we managed to get our hands on him -- he got himself tangled up in a briar bush. After DH untangled him, while still nervous, he was much more willing to be handled (and he's not a biter), so on Monday we took him to the Humane Society to have him checked for a microchip (no chip) and made an appointment with a groomer (next week). On the way home, he got carsick, so kind of forced the issue.
I wore out my clippers on him -- literally. And had to finish the job with scissors, so he looks mighty rough right now -- but at least all those nasty mats are gone and he's had a bath so he no longer reeks. The pile of wool that I cut off of him was larger than the dog I had left! LOL
He maybe weighs 5 lbs and he's just a puppy! No more than a year old, and probably closer to 6 months (he still has his baby canines sitting next to his adult canines, and his toenails have never been trimmed but are not overgrown)
Poor little fellow, to have someone allow him to get into such horrible condition and then dump him on the side of the road with a blizzard coming. He's still very timid and acts like he's used to having things thrown at him, he'll come and sit in my lap when I'm sitting but stays well out of kicking distance when I'm standing. He's much more willing to interact with me than with DH, leading me to believe that he may have been mistreated by a man.
We named him "Guy", mainly because we didn't know his name and just started calling him the little guy, and he very quickly came to recognize Guy. He loves our big girls and they like him too. It's funny to see such a big, clumsy, ditzy, clod as Brandy (72 lb Boxer/Pitbull cross), playing oh so gently with little Guy!
Here he is when we first brought him home and we were trying to entice him to come inside.
Here's the pile of wool that I cut off of him.
And here's Mr Guy, sporting a new (butchered) hair cut, but clean and smelling sweet!
